Phone Sanitization in Public Areas

How to safely use and sanitize your phone in high traffic areas post pandemic (these areas include: theme parks, public transportation, office buildings, etc). You don’t have to copy the title word for word, just sharing a direction.

Cellphones have become an extension of our hands and arms. We use them multiple times a day to make phone calls, check on emails, find places, and play games. If they are not in our hands, they are close by. During lunch or dinner they are situated next to our plate. When we pick up a cup of coffee, we set them down on the counter while we pay.

During the Covid crisis we have become incredibly conscious about washing our hands frequently and using hand sanitizers. We disinfect desks and countertops. However, how often do you clean that cellphone that has been sitting next to us?

In January 2020, ZD Net took a poll and found that 60% of individuals never cleaned their mobile devices. Under 10% would probably clean it after they had been ill. They repeated the poll in August of that year and now 40% said they did clean their phones.

It begs the questions how often should I clean my phone and what is the best way to do it.

Dr. David Westenberg, associate professor of biological sciences at Missouri University of Science and Technology, reminds us that there are a number of microbes that can be harmful, besides the Coronavirus, like bacteria and fungi.

Under normal circumstances you should disinfect your phone, especially the touchscreen, and its case at least daily. If you have allowed someone else to handle the phone or use it, it should be dealt with as soon as possible.

Before using any cleaning elements or techniques, check with the manufacturer to see what they say.

Some recommendations include:

• Soft, lint-free cloth

• Avoid using liquids

• Avoid spraying directly onto the device

• Don’t use bleaches or abrasives

Another option is to use UV lighting. Glissner manufactures a wonderful product called The CleanPhone™. It is the perfect addition to your home or office. Just place your phone through the top cover and a mere 20 seconds later the phone comes out completely sanitized. It uses 4 UV-C bulbs to complete the process.

This is a product designed to provide the maximum cleanliness with a minimum of effort. Since it uses no chemicals or liquids it is safe to use. It can handle most phones including iPhone 11 with its case, Samsung S20 with case, and older Samsung and Pixel mobile phones.

Laboratory tested, the cleaning device will remove 99.99% of all viruses and bacteria within the 20 second processing period.

Now no matter where you have been, you can be assured that your phone can be sanitized quickly and safely.
